Optimal uptake kinetics: physiological acclimation explains the pattern of nitrate uptake by phytoplankton in the ocean

چکیده
Phytoplankton supply the base of the marine food web and drive the biogeochemical cycles of carbon and nutrients. Over much of the ocean, their growth is limited by their uptake of nitrogen (as nitrate), which has most commonly been described by the hyperbolic Michaelis–Menten (MM) equation. However, the lack of a theory to explain variations in MM constants has hindered our ability to predict the response of marine ecosystems to changes in environmental conditions. The MM equation fits data from short-term experiments well, but does not agree with steady-state experiments over wide ranges of nutrient concentrations. In contrast, the recently developed optimal uptake kinetics (OU) does agree with the latter and can also describe the observed pattern of MM halfsaturation constants from field experiments. OU kinetics explains the observed pattern of N uptake as the result of a general physiological trade-off between nutrient uptake capacity and affinity. The existence of a general trade-off would imply a relatively high degree of predictability in the response of nutrient uptake to changing nutrient concentrations and thus provide a basis for predicting effects of climate change on marine ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles.

Cyanide acclimation in willow (Salix babylonica L.), a prospect for the phytoremediation of cyanide
Phytoremediation counts as a major method for future which essentially needs resistance to contaminating agents. We pretreated the plants (Salix babylonica, as a model plant in phytoremediation of polluted waters) by sodium cyanide (0, 3 and 5 mg CN- L-1) to induce resistance with regard to acclimation and then examined their resistance to higher concentrations of cyanide. Accordingly, some of ...

متن کاملVariability in Nitrate Uptake Kinetics of Phytoplankton Communities in a Mediterranean Coastal Lagoon
Nitrate uptake kinetics of different phytoplankton communities exhibit great variability over a 1-year period. Classical saturation kinetics accompanied by an induction phase are shown by blooms of Chaetoceros sp. in low nitrate waters. Biphasic kinetics, with transition points between 10 and 50 ìM, are shown by blooms of Skeletonema costatum and flagellates, while unsaturated kinetics (up to 1...

The Michaelis-Menten model ofenzyme kinetics has been applied widely to nutrient uptake in phytoplankton. Practically, the heavy nitrogen isotope (15N) is used to measure nitrogen incorporation, and the uptake velocity of the Michaelis-Menten expression has been obtained by normalizing the rate to particulate N. NO,uptake velocity normalized to total particulate organic N (PON) in newly upwelle...
